The First Presbyterian Church Wausau Free Clinic is committed to offering no-charge, high quality primary care services to low income, uninsured residents of the area primarily using highly qualified volunteers.
All services shall be designed and offered to uplift and maintain the dignity, health and autonomy of the recipient. We constantly strive to be an advocate and ally for those we serve.

Medication Volunteer
REPORTS TO:
Director of Medication Services
GENERAL SUMMARY:
A medication volunteer is responsible for all elements of prescription/order processing. Performs accurate and timely preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical products and associated functions, as or under the supervision of an appropriately licensed staff member. Performs multiple job duties of the Wausau Free Clinic Dispensary including drug filling/distributing processes, inventory management, order entry, and drug preparation. Maintains standards of confidentiality, accuracy, and timeliness.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The timely preparation and delivery of medications in accordance with physician orders and patient needs.
- Receives medication orders and gathers proper information needed to accurately fill and dispense according to departmental or organizational policies and law.
- Enters orders/prescriptions into computer system accurately and efficiently.
- Properly follows up with the physician or nurse on any area of the order/prescription that needs clarifying or questioning.
- Accurately prepares the medication order/prescription.
- Files records, patient orders, prescriptions and other paperwork as necessary.
- Maintains work area and Dispensary in a neat and organized manner.
- Delivers medications to patient care areas as needed.
- Packages medications and properly labels drugs.
- Ensures proper inventory levels/quantities that meet the needs of the clinic.
- Accurately replaces items to stock as appropriate or requested.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform pharmaceutical calculations accurately.
- Understands the basic functions of supplying medications.
- Accepts the delegated act of dispensing medication from a licensed physician or pharmacist based on the medication volunteer qualifications.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Required basic knowledge of medications including brand/generic names, normal dosage forms and medication insurances/billing nuances (may be learned on-the-job).
- Necessary computer skills including typing and the ability to learn proprietary software; knowledge of programs such as Excel and Word is beneficial.
- Ability to understand policies, procedures and technical directions related to departmental activities.
- Ability to present information and respond to questions from providers, staff, co-workers, patients, family members and the general public.
- Basic math and algebra skills.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Pharmacy experience preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge of office procedures normally acquired through completion of a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Pharmacist or pharmacy tech licensure preferred.
- Competencies in Safety, Patient Rights, Confidentiality and HIPAA must be completed prior to working in a healthcare organization.
