The Wausau Free Clinic continues to expand the number of low-income and uninsured patients seen and the scope of services provided. As our clinic expands, so has the need for additional infrastructure in managing clinic operations and diversifying revenue sources. Major accomplishments for 2025 include:
• The clinic served 802 unduplicated patients, 487 being new patients. The clinic had 1,839 provider visits along with 1,025 interactions. Ninety percent (90%) of patients were at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, 87% between the ages of 18 and 64, and 84% a member of racial and ethnic minority group.
• The Dispensary provided 2,055 in-house prescription medications with a retail value of $1,285,873, compared to 1,360 in-house prescription medications in 2024. Two additional sources for free medications and dispensary supplies were secured, having four vendors in place to choose from.
• The clinic continues to benefit from in-kind services from 1) Marshfield Clinic for lab tests,
imaging, and specialty services; 2) SmartScan for MRI scans; as well as 3) Specialized
procedures provided by Associates in Pathology, ENT Associates, Eye Clinic of WI, GI
Associates, and Rib Mountain Oral Surgery. In addition, the clinic joined Maven, a national
association that provide specialty consultation services. Value of in-kind services for 2025 is
$489,247.
• In 2025, for every $1.00 secured in grants and donations, we received $8.00 in in-kind goods and volunteer services, totally $2,323,752. .
• Services were expanded to include on-site ENT specialist and behavioral health counseling. In the fall, plans were developed to launch two new services in January 2026; an eye clinic and linking patients to community resources to address their unmet basic needs.
• The clinic’s website received a fresh look, being launched in May of 2025.
• In June, the clinic created a clinic assistant position necessitated by the abrupt discontinuation of the AmeriCorps program. This decision was made to avoid an interruption and decrease in services. The clinic was fortunate to have secured a United Way of Marathon County grant that will cover the clinic assistant salary and benefits in 2026 and 2027.
• We are projecting a short fall in revenue for 2025, tapping into reserves. For 2026, 73% of
revenue sources have been secured to date, compared to 28% at this time in 2025. In
2025, the clinic submitted 13 local, state, and national grant applications, having 7 awarded.
• Our first annual appeal fundraising was launched in December as a way to bridge our funding gap with the grow of the Free Clinic’s budget. As part of our fundraising efforts, an in-kind video was produced telling a story of how volunteers and donors are making a difference in our community. The clinic received $29,471 in gifts/donations from the annual appeal through January 2026.
• The Community Advisory Council, composed of 17 community partners, continues to provide input and guidance to the leadership of the Wausau Free Clinic concerning operations and serves as a vehicle for collaboration among the clinic and strategic partners.
• The Wausau Free Clinic continues to benefit from being sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church, providing financial management, HR/benefits administration, and general liability insurance coverage.
